RUBIS International Workshop on the Resilience of Rubber-based Agroforestry Systems in the Context of Global Change

The RUBIS International Workshop on the Resilience of Rubber-based Agroforestry Systems in the Context of Global Change aims to bring together the main scientific actors in order to deliver a complete inventory of all rubber-based agroforestry system (RAS) studies and to establish both a typology of these systems and new directions to make RAS more efficient and resilient to global changes.

April 5th – April 9th 2021

Workshop Objective

Smallholders account for 85% of world natural rubber production. Monospecific plantations are currently the main rubber-based cropping system worldwide, except in Indonesia where rubber-based agroforestry systems (RAS) still account for 20-30% of the surface of rubber plantations. RAS are usually presented as more resilient to NR price volatility and climate change than monospecific plantation. However, the resilience of RAS depends on the sharing of resources (light, water, nutrient) between the rubber trees and the associated species. Little is known on that topic. Therefore, there is a need to carry on research aiming at designing more resilient RAS.

Many agroforestry studies have been conducted by several organizations (CIFOR, ICRAF, UGM, IRRI, CIRAD, Univ Gottingen, etc.). International Workshop entitled the Resilience of Rubber-based Agroforestry Systems in the Context of Global Change is organized by the consortium of CIRAD, IRRI, and UGM under the umbrella of Rubber Agroforestry Breeding Initiative for Smallholders (RUBIS) project ( www.rubis-project.org ). The workshop aims to bring together the main scientific actors in order to deliver a complete inventory of all studies on RAS and to establish both a typology of these systems and new directions to make RAS more efficient and resilient to global changes.
